TED Talks News Media

by Joe on May 14, 2008

This has to be one of the most disturbing TED videos I have ever seen. It angers me to think that so many of us watch, listen, or read the news and think we know what is going on, when in reality we really have no clue. Everything is brought to us through a filter of what will produce the greatest ratings. This video reiterates the need for students to know that a world exists outside of their sphere of knowledge and experience and we must do what we can to bring it to them. I’m off to go find something other than the latest Brittney Spears melt-down for current events tomorrow. Maybe if I turn off the TV, computer, and radio every time I hear this junk I can adjust the Nielsen Ratings.

That is irritating. I knew that the media deals out its own goggles with which to view the world, but I never considered it in this way.
