Joe,
Your concerns resonate with mine as I prepare for the new school year. I teach Sophomore and Junior English, in addition to a digital media/storytelling course. There is NO talk of any digital literacy within regular English--after all, the End of Course assessment is all about traditional reading comprehension and literary analysis.
I've been exploring these issues on my blog, and thought you might like to read my latest post:

Thanks for the resources, Joe!

And, yes, if I make it out that way, I would enjoy seeing what you and your colleagues are up to with digital reading and writing. :-)

Troy,

Thanks for the feedback! In a few workshops I have lead, there have been interesting conversations around the standard you mentioned. We looked at the K, 4th, 8th, and 12th grade level standards for that particular anchor standard. The teachers and administrators are usually pretty shocked at the notion of having kids use different digital writing tools as early as kindergarten. Standard 7 in Reading Informational Text and Literature is pretty interesting too.

<blockquote>
7. Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words.
</blockquote>

I think you have seen the handout before, but it's posted here http://www.joewoodonline.com/digital-writing-common-core/ as well as on Digital IS.

The teacher described in the post was part of our digital writing inquiry group this year and is a huge Troy Hicks fan after readin your book. Should you ever make it to Sacramento, you'll have to put her classroom on your "must stop" list. :-)

Joe,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the digital reading and writing workshop. Also, in relation to CCSS, I often have teachers look in the writing standards at this language (here, copied from the 6th grade writing):

"Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and present the relationships between information and ideas efficiently as well as to interact and collaborate with others."

We have to encourage (actually, more than encourage, require) students to create compelling, interactive digital texts when they do get access to computers, and not just have them copy and paste their 5 paragraphs into an automated essay scoring website. That doesn't count as digital writing; creative and critical composition does.

Thanks for leading the charge with your 1:1 initiative and reminding us that it isn't only about access, but about how we employ the tools.
